Operations

The fire district is approximately 100 square miles in size.  We are located toward the southern portion of San Joaquin County.  The District surrounds, but does not include the City of Manteca.  However, the City of Lathrop is included within our area of responsibility.  For a map of the district, please go to The District.

The district is a mixture of urban and rural areas.  The district has more than 8105 single family dwellings, totaling 16.5 million square feet.  The structures with a commercial use total more than 779,000 square feet.  Our industrial area of protection is 11.1 million square feet.  We also have acres and acres of agricultural areas, including dairies and poultry farms.  Some of our bigger crop farms include orchards (almond, walnut and olive) corn, pumpkins, watermelons, alfalfa, squash and strawberries.

The fire district consists of four stations, two in Lathrop, one in the southern portion of the district and one in the eastern portion of the district.  The first station in Lathrop, Station 31, along with our Administrative offices, is located at 800 East J Street, Lathrop.  The southern station, Station 32, our Nile Garden Station, is located 22701 South Union Road, Manteca.  This station is located near Nile Garden School, near the intersection of Nile and Union Roads.  The eastern station, Station 33, our New Haven Station, is located at 9121 East Lathrop Road, Manteca.  This station is located near New Haven School, at the intersection of Lathrop and Austin Roads.  The second Lathrop station, Station 34, is located at 460 River Islands Parkway.  Station 34 is our newest station, opened on May 20, 2006.

The fire district is a combination paid/volunteer department.  We have 37 paid firefighters, three administrative employees and 18 reserve firefighters.  Our command structure is as follows: the Fire Chief, one Deputy Chief, three Division Chiefs (one Prevention Chief, one Operations and one Training Chief), 12 Captains, 21 Firefighter/Engineers and 18 Reserve Firefighters.  In the office, we have a Business Manager, a fire inspector and a Permit Clerk.

The daily staffing works as a three shift battalion.  The four chiefs work Monday thru Friday, 8 to 5.  At least one Chief Officer is available at all times, as a supervising officer.  The firefighters are divided into three shifts, 11 persons per shift.  The firefighters work 24 hour shifts, starting at 8:00 each morning.  Stations 32 and 33 have a Captain and Firefighter assigned daily.  Station 34 has a Captain and two firefighters assigned.  The Headquarters Station, Station 31, has a Captain and three firefighters assigned.

The governing body of the district consist of five members, elected by the people of the district.  The term they serve is 4 years.  Our Board of Directors meet at least once a month, with the Regular meeting on the third Thursday at 7:00 pm.  The meeting place is in the Meeting Room at Station 31, in Lathrop.
